Paton’s Hattrick Leads Bronco’s in Win Over Lions

The Ambrose Lions played host to the Olds College Broncos Friday night in their second matchup of the season. The Lion's continue to search for their first win of the season while the Broncos looked to improve to 4-3-2.

It didn't take long for the Broncos to pick up where they left in their previous matchup against the Lions with a goal in the 16th minute by 2nd year forward #12 Tiona Paton. Paton continues to have a strong season entering the game with 10 goals on the season which puts her tied for 5th in the ACAC. After a couple more shots on goal that were stopped by Lion's keeper Joy Watson, Paton returned to the score sheet with her second goal of the game in the 36th minute. Watson was again put to work in the first half with a spectacular save in the 36th minute, but in the closing minutes of the half midfielder Mirtalem Vriend put in her fourth goal of the season to end the half with a 3-0 lead.

The game continued to be eventful into the second half as Watson was forced to make more saves for the Lions. Ambrose would finally show some offensive spirit late in the game as both #4 Kate Siemens and #22 Shifra Heatherington were able to break free on breakaways, but neither were able to capitalize. The Broncos' were also generating strong offensive opportunities during the second half, and luck would once more go their way with Paton finishing a hattrick in the 85th minute, which freshman Sadie Nygaard quickly followed up with her first goal of the season, closing the game with a score of 5-0.

Tonight's player of the game honours were awarded to #7 Naomi Rowe for the Olds College Broncos and to #10 Janessa Parker for the Ambrose Lions.

The Ambrose Lions will be back in action in a Saturday matinee game against the SAIT Trojans.
