Lions Bounce Back, Split Home Series

Lions Bounce Back, Split Home Series

The Ambrose Lions took on the Briercrest Clippers on a snowy Saturday afternoon to cap off their weekend home series. The Lions looked to turn the tables after losing a heartbreaker the night before.

Ambrose got off to a better start this time around taking an early lead to start the game. Briercrest would, however, respond with a run of their own to close the first quarter 12-14. The second quarter remained a back-and-forth affair, but the Lions maintained control thanks to some strong play from Makenna Graham and Kamsiyochi Ogbudibe. Ogbudibe earned player of the game honors for Ambrose thanks to her 19 rebounds, 13 of which came in the first half to lead Ambrose to 33-28 advantage going into the break.

The Lions carried their momentum into the third with Graham leading the way defensively. Ambrose limited the Clippers to just 6 points while also putting up their strongest quarter offensively to take a commanding 54-34 lead before the final frame. Clippers guard Melissa Ellis caught fire again in the fourth knocking down a pair of free-throws and a pair of threes, but the lead was just too much to overcome as the team struggled to hold on to any momentum long enough to bring it back. Whoever controlled the boards controlled the game in each of the two matchups between these teams as Briercrest held a 58-45 rebounding advantage in their first meeting, but Ambrose led 57-41 to take the second game.

Briercrest guard Taylor Baerg came off the bench to earn player of the game in today's matchup. The Clippers will look to bounce back from their 53-71 defeat next week against Lethbridge, and the Ambrose Lions will look to carry their momentum against Olds College as they meet for back-to-back games next weekend.
