Lions Fall to First Place Lightning

Lions Fall to First Place Lightning

The Ambrose Lions matched up against the South division leading St. Mary's University Lightning for the second time in as many days on Saturday night. The 14-3 Lightning won their previous matchup 72-62 at home.

Rushing out of the gates the Lightning quickly took an early advantage, opening the game on a 12-2 run. Makenna Graham hit the first of her three 3-pointers in the quarter to help the Lions stop the bleeding. But she couldn't do it all against the more balanced offense from the Lightning who shot 55% from the field as a team to the Lions 33% in the quarter to finish the quarter ahead 25-15.

The Lions got over their slow start in the second, shooting 50% in the quarter. But the Lightning were able to keep up their own offense output to limit the ground the Lions were able to make up. After winning the quarter 18-15 the Lions entered halftime down just 33-40.

The Lightning were ice cold in the third quarter, shooting just 3-18, with #11 Andrea Stitt hitting her teams only field goals. But despite the defensive lockdown, the Lions were only slightly able to cut into the lead, winning the quarter 13-9 to go into the final frame down 46-49.

Both teams locked it down in the fourth as each team were only able to score 4 field goals apiece. But the Lightning, thanks to their dominance on the glass, were able to get to the line to gain a bigger edge. With the advantage in hand the Lightning closed out the game 64-54.

The game was a battle of the starters, as both teams combined for only 4 points total off the bench. For the Lightning, player of the game was awarded to #11 Andria Stitt who led her team in scoring with 18, and played all 40 minutes. For the Lions' side, #7 Tegan McArthur received the award who also led her team in both categories, scoring 16 points in 37 minutes played while also picking up 6 steals.
