2024 Men's Futsal Championships

Calgary, AB | Ambrose Lions Men's Futsal at 2024 Championships

The Ambrose Lions Men's Futsal team traveled to Lac La Biche this past weekend for the 2024 Men's Futsal Championships hosted by Portage College. They finished the tournament with a 4th place finish. 

The men's futsal team entered the weekend by taking on Lakeland College and finished the game with a 3-5 finish. #10 Amiel Cabayao was the player of the game for this opening match. With this finish, the Lions had a quick turn around and played early the next morning against Medicine Hat. The Rattlers came out strong in this game and were leading the lions in goals very early on. The Lions managed to secure a goal from #7 Aristotle Cruz, which secured him player of the game. 

Hungry for their first win of the tournament, the Lions were taking on the Portage Voyagers that same night. The voyagers came out strong, leading the Lions 2-0 at half. The lions recuperated at half and score two goals to bring them to overtime. Both teams were fighting for the win as they pushed in extra time. The Voyagers scored the first goal putting the Lions down by one.  In the second 5 minutes of extra time, Josh Clarke from the Lions was able to find the back of the net and put the game at 3-3. Nearing the end of the game, #17 Brady De Castro took control of the ball, dribbled past the goalie and secured the victory by scoring a goal and bringing the Lions to a 4-3 win. The players of the game for this match was #13 Abayomi Afolabi for his outstanding saves all throughout the match. 

As the team headed into semi -finals, they were taking on the Medicine Hat Rattlers. Hungry for the gold medal game, the Lions played hard in this match but came up short in a 4-1 finish.

In the bronze medal match, the Lions fought valiantly and came up short in their medal finish. They ended the season with a 4th place finish in Alberta.

Two members of the Lions Men's futsal team were awarded ACAC awards at the banquet. #17 Brady De Castro was awarded an All Conference award as well as Adam Monkman for Coach of the Year.
