2025 Futsal Season Recap
Women's Futsal
The Ambrose women's Lions soccer team transitioned to the futsal court somewhat seamlessly. An air of excitement was evident among those who were experiencing this indoor version of the beautiful game for the first time.
Both road trips to regional qualifiers proved a valuable opportunity to raise the level of this new program. As every minute of each half ticked away, so too was another minute of experience filed away by our resilient students of the game. Elbows battered and bruised offer proof that Lions' Keeper Larkin Himmelreich is not scared of heights, colourfully convincing onlookers that she is some type of a flying caped crusader. The first-year keeper leaves her last road trip with an almost 90 per cent save percentage.
By no means was Himmelreich the only beacon of our Lions Futsal campaign. Cunning outdoor midfielder Elisa Wilde was literally up to her old magic tricks again, this time on the futsal court. Leaving many a defender wondering where the ball had disappeared to, the Lions Rookie garnered many accolades in the South on her way to earning an ACAC All-Conference Award. With Ambrose captain, Gracey Nichol, still recovering from surgery, team assists leader Haley Tovell stepped in to take the reins and admirably guide the troops, sometimes logging 17 minutes in a 20-minute half. Fully back from injury, Ella Mysko seemed fixated on turning sharpshooter, tallying four goals that tested the quality of the netting. The individual stories are many.
Together our proud Lions women's futsal team were motivated, focused, and tested, particularly during three 1-goal losses and a tie that evoked in them the true emotion of sport. We look forward to the next step that these women will take as they prepare for the 2025-26 ACAC Outdoor Season.

Men's Futsal
The Ambrose Lions Men's Futsal team had a historic 2025 season, recording the best performance in program history with a 5-1-4 record, finishing with 16 points. The Lions narrowly missed out on the ACAC Futsal Championships by just one point, with their fate coming down to the final game—a thrilling 4-4 draw against Olds College that ultimately saw Olds advance.
Despite falling short of the Championships, the Lions finished the season as one of the hottest teams in the ACAC, going undefeated in their final five games with 4 wins and 1 draw. However, their strong push in the latter half of the season was not enough to secure a spot in Lloydminster.
"The lesson learned was that it takes consistency, the health of players, and a bit of luck to get through all 10 games and into the Championships. Half the season at your best is not enough," said Coach Monkman. "It's bittersweet- we finished the season in the best form our program has ever seen. We scored a remarkable number of goals, and we took points off every team in our last five games. It's the most dominant I've ever seen a Lions team play."
The Lions' offense was a force to be reckoned with, scoring an impressive 50 goals in 10 games—second only to the championship-winning MHC Rattlers, who netted 59 goals. Notably, Ambrose handed MHC their only loss of the season in an electrifying 9-7 victory.
While the team's success was a collective effort, several players delivered standout performances. Brady de Castro was instrumental in the Lions' attack, being involved in 27 of the team's 50 goals. He finished the season with 16 goals—second in the ACAC—and 11 assists, both single-season records for the program. His exceptional play earned him a spot on the ACAC All-Conference First Team. With 28 goals in 25 total games; including 5 championship games in 2024, de Castro has cemented himself as Ambrose's all-time leading futsal goal scorer.
Ryan Wieninger played a crucial role despite battling injuries. The Lions were undefeated in the six games he played in, where he stepped up as a third-string goalkeeper for the final five games of the season, even contributing one goal and two assists in his undefeated run. Josh Clarke and Davi Rodrigues shared a similar story, missing the same four games (all losses) as Wieninger but making significant contributions when in the lineup, combining for nine goals and five assists between them.
Emmanuel Lamvu had a stellar second season, thriving in the Lions' high-tempo system while scoring three goals and providing five assists. Aaron Hoey, like Wieninger, was called upon to play multiple roles, serving as a goalkeeper in five games and an out player in five. He secured a dominant season opening win in goal against rivals SAIT and tallied four goals—including one while playing as a goalkeeper—and two assists. Rookie Luke Hunter had a standout season and made an immediate impact, playing in all 10 games scoring 7 goals and adding 2 assists.
The future of Ambrose Futsal is brighter than ever, as the program continues to build a strong foundation for sustained success in the ACAC. This season saw the strongest recruiting class in program history, with new players making an immediate impact. With the momentum from a program best season, the Lions are poised to take another step forward in 2026 as they aim for an even stronger performance and a shot at the ACAC Championships.
