Lions Show Out in Dominant Home Opener

The Ambrose Lions faced off against the Briercrest Clippers Friday night in front of a packed gym to start what looks to be a promising season.

The first quarter opened by trading scoring runs. Ambrose managed to take as much as a 6-point lead at various points of the quarter, but Briercrest responded in kind, always bringing it back to a tie but not able to gain a lead themselves. Trading threes back and forth brought the opening frame to a close tied 22-22.

The second quarter remained a very back and forth affair, remaining tied at 37 with just under four minutes to play. But then the Lions finally kicked into gear. A pair of threes from Isaac Gray lead the Lions on a 13-2 run to close out the half, holding Briercrest scoreless until the final seconds when Jackson Mayes finally got something to fall.

Once the Lions had a firm grip on the lead they would not let go. Continuing to trade baskets for the first five minutes of the quarter, with a pair of free-throws from Matthew Bryant closing the gap to 56-44. But that was as close as they would bring it. Ambrose dominated the rest of the quarter, closing it out up 75-52. The final frame was a bit of a defensive slugfest, but Ambrose refused to take their foot off the gas closing out the game with a dominant 88-56 score line.

Player of the game honors were given out to each teams leading scorer. #13 Oroma Bongomin lead the way for Briercrest with 16, knocking in four shots from deep. Isaac Gray led the way for the home team with 24 to go along with 4 assists and 7 rebounds. Briercrest will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon as these teams meet again at Ambrose at 3pm.
