Lions Stay Undefeated

On Friday evening of November 11, the Ambrose Lions took on the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder. The Lions came into Friday night sporting a perfect 8-0 record this season to lead the South division. Meanwhile the Thunder sit at 5th in the North at 2-4.

Either the Lions came out flat or the Thunder came out firing on all cylinders in the first set jumping out to a strong early lead. Concordia's middle hitter and eventual player of the game Olivia Spelt dominated the opening set offensively and with strong serving to go along with Renae Regal's impressive defense. Concordia took the opening set in dominant fashion with a score of 25-13, only the fourth set the Lions have lost all season.

The Lions bounced back in the second set as they started to find their groove. The second set belonged to Lions #2 Taylor Hart, racking up kills and serving well. Combined with Madeline Williscroft also picking it up, the Lions had a much stronger set, taking it 25-18 after jumping out to an early lead and hanging on to it.

The third set was a more back and forth affair, trading scores so that neither team could get a solid foothold in the set. As the set progressed in a deadlock, #12 Gracee Fehr came up clutch for Ambrose to finally pull out ahead and close out the set, a major factor in her earning player of the game for the Lions. The Lions were in control two sets to one after taking the third 25-20.

Despite the pristine record of their opponents, the Thunder weren't going to go down without a fight in the fourth set. Olivia Spelt had another strong set to earn herself player of the game for Concordia, along with Emma Thompson who led the Thunder with 9 kills in the match. The teams were in lockstep throughout the set, remaining tied at 24-24. After trading scores, the Lions were able to close it out 27-25 to remain perfect on the season.

The Lions will take on the also undefeated The King's University Eagles tomorrow night at Ambrose. The Lions will be looking to continue climbing the CCAA ranks, where they currently sit seventh in the country. The King's University currently sits one spot ahead of them in sixth.
