Lions Sweep Weekend Series Versus SAIT

Lions Sweep Weekend Series Versus SAIT

The 10-1 Ambrose Lions took on the SAIT Trojans for the second time in as many nights on Saturday. The Lions were looking to repeat their victory in straight sets from the previous night.

SAIT took an early 5-4 lead to kick off the opening set thanks in part to strong play from #8 Grace Coulter. The Lions responded, however, going on a run to take a strong 17-11 lead. In response, the Trojans rattled off 4 points in a row to trim the deficit and force a timeout from the Lions side. The teams traded runs to close it out, with the Lions winning the opening set 25-20.

The Lions jumped out to an early lead to start the second thanks to the serving of #2 Taylor Hart to take a 5-0 lead. #3 Taylor English subbed in for the Trojans to try and get the team going, after which the Trojans responded with a 4-point run of their own. The Trojans took a timeout down 8-10. The Trojans used their second timeout of the set down 13-16. The Trojans briefly took the lead 19-18 and again at 25-24, forcing a timeout out of the Lions as the game came down to the wire. With #6 LeeAnne Arnott serving, the Trojans closed it out 27-25 with a block that just stayed in by an inch.

Looking to respond, the Lions opened the third set going ahead 10-5. The Trojans finally called timeout after going down 6-13. The Lions continued to pour on the pressure quickly taking a dominant 21-10 lead. That lead would prove to be too great, as the Lions closed out the set 25-14.

The Lions continued to roll entering the fourth set, jumping out to a 10-6 lead thanks to strong team defense and offense play from Madi Williscroft. The Trojans called their second timeout of the set down 7-13 to try and rediscover the success of the second set. Despite a respectable effort, the Trojans just couldn't contain the Lions' offensive firepower as the Lions took the fourth and final set 25-19, taking the match 3-1.

Player of the game honors were given to Trojans #18 Sophia Ferguson and Lions #8 Lexi Herrod respectively. With the win the Lions continue to solidify their position atop the South division with a 12-point lead over second place Rundle Polytechnic. The Lions won't be back in action until the new year when their mettle will be tested against the undefeated Lakeland College Rustlers.
