Queens Sweep Lions at Ambrose

Queens Sweep Lions at Ambrose

After a nailbiter match in Red Deer on Friday Night that the Lions eked out a win in the fifth set the Queens looked to get some payback in the Lions Den.

Kicking off the first set the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens seized an early lead going up 5-1. The Lions struggled to string together any offensive runs against the Queens defense, needing to call a timeout as the deficit grew to 6-12. Out of the timeout Ambrose was finally able to put together some sustained offense to get back within 2. The Queens responded with sustained pressure of their own to restore a firm grip on the lead at 20-14, triggering another Lions timeout. Ambrose couldn't stem the tide as the Queens closed out the first set 25-15.

Red Deer poured on the pressure again to start the second set, taking an early 77-point lead. Down 11-18, the Lions needed to put together a run which they were able to do, cutting the deficit to 16-19. Unfazed, the Queens came right back growing the lead to 22-16, forcing Ambrose to use their second timeout. Their adjustments would prove to not be enough as the Queens would take the second set 25-19 to take a commanding 2-0 advantage.

The third set didn't start much better for the Lions as they tried different lineup combinations to try and solve the Queens' defense. But the Queens stayed on a roll, quickly going ahead 11-5. Try as they might, the Lions couldn't overcome the early deficit as the Queens completed the sweep winning the third and final set 25-18.

With the win Red Deer Polytechnic ends their 3-game losing streak. Players of the game were Queens' #5 Danielle Wiens and Lions #2 Taylor Hart. The Lions will be facing off against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks next week. The Kodiaks currently sit in 2nd place in the South behind the Ambrose Lions.
